The Greater World Subculture marks
the true sole of the earthship community where many of the original
earthship builders made their own homes. This home features two
bedrooms, a living room with soaring ceilings, and .993 acres boarding
the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River Preserve.
The following video tour and still pictures will introduce you to
this beautiful home.
This view shows the home as seen from the south.
The left side features a storage shed with the wind generator behind it.
Next to it is the solar hot water heater with the bathroom and
photovoltaic panels behind it. The right side of the home contains
the great room combination of kitchen and living space with the bedrooms
behind.
The main entry of the home is through this door at the
northwest corner of the home. A storage area sits in the opening
to the left. This door enters into an airlock area separating the
outside air from the inside, keeping the temperature controlled in the
house.
This view shows the view from the mud room into the main
foyer of the home. Note the Saltillo tile floors. The door
in the back of the picture leads into the bathroom area with the toilet.
Upon entering the foyer you see the ample storage to the
left and the door leading into the great room. This area contains
entrances to the bathrooms and a door leading to the spacious back yard.
High windows bring in abundant light.
An innovative design splits the bathroom into to
functional spaces. One side contains the toilet and a pedestal
sink.
The other portion of the bathroom sits through a
different door from the foyer. It features a tiled double sink (on
the left), and a tub with shower on the right. This bright space
provides a cheerful atmosphere with views to the back yard and beyond.
Upon leaving the foyer, you enter the great room with
its tall viga cathedral ceilings. A lush gray water planter
beneath the window gives the room a tropical feel. The wood stove
supplements the heat on cool cloudy days. In this view, the
bedrooms are to the left and the kitchen sits straight ahead. The
white rectangular box in the center of this picture is the Sun Frost DC
Refrigerator.
Set in the southeast corner, windows surround the
kitchen giving it lots of light. The kitchen features the propane
gas stove shown here.
In the main living area, steps lead down two a library
nook on the left and one of the two bedrooms on the right.
The door and latching window provide privacy for the bedroom or allow
fresh air and light to entered when open.
Another set of stairs leads up from the living room to a
large bedroom. This bedroom features a view-filled eastern window
as well as windows overlook the great room.
The spacious back yard features a low wall between the
close in patio area and land beyond. Trees shade this area and
make it a nice place for relaxation or play.
this view looks from the yard toward the south west
corner of the home. To the left is a large storage room that also
contains one of the homes cisterns. The center shows the solar hot
water heater. Underneath it is a backup on-demand propane hot
water heater. To the far right of this picture you see the bathtub.
